Railway Jobs Recruitment Process – An Understanding of Hierarchical Structure For Group A, B, C, and D

Indian Railways are one of the largest railways networks in world. It is a state owned unit wholly owned by Government of India under administrative control of Ministry of Railways. It covers a distance of 65, 000 km with network of 115, 000 km of tracks and 7500 stations. The very first train in India ran between Bombay to Thane in 1853. According to a survey, approximately 25 million passengers travel through trains daily. This figure reaches to 9 billion annually and is likely to grow in coming time. Railways are most convenient medium for a common man who travels to and forth in different cities for work.

Considering its huge structure IR has been divided into 17 zones for better management. In order to manage each and every department of Indian Railways there are around 1.4 million employees working under it. It is considered as ninth largest commercial or utility employer in entire world. Strong man power of railways is tough to manage. Every year thousands of candidates are recruited in this sector. Therefore exams are conducted for appointment of officers at different levels. Staff of Indian Railways is classified in four categories namely:

  • Group ‘A’ (Gazetted)
  • Group ‘B’ (Gazetted)
  • Group ‘C’ (Non Gazetted)
  • Group ‘D’ (Non Gazetted)

Recruitment of all gazetted employees is conducted through Union Public Service Commission exams. On the other hand non gazetted employees are recruited through Railway Recruitment Control Board. Recruited candidates are subjected to training which is conducted at six centralised training institutes of Indian Railways.

Recruitment of Group ‘A’ Employees

These officers are of highest grade in Indian Railways. Recruitment in this grade is considered toughest of all as competition is hard to crack. Group A officers are recruited through 3 ways:

  1. Competitive exams of UPSC (Civil Services Examination, Combined Engineering Services Examination and Medical Services Exam)
  2. Promotion of officers from Group ‘B’
  3. Special Class Apprentices appointment through UPSC.

Recruitment of Group ‘B’ Employees

Group B employees are not appointed through any direct exam. They are only appointed by promotion of Group C candidates depending upon their performance.

Recruitment of Group ‘C’ Employees

These employees get opportunity in both technical and non technical domain. Separate exams are held for each zone depending upon requirements. These exams are conducted under 19 Railway Recruitment Boards. Technical domains are telecommunication, civil, mechanical and electrical engineering etc whereas non technical domains include assistants, clerks, ticket collectors, train clerks and station masters.

Recruitment of Group ‘D’ Employees
